Overcoming the destructive pain of anxiety or depression

Anxiety and depression result when normal, natural human emotions become out of balance and cause a disruption to a person’s optimum functioning. A person’s mood affects every aspect of life including relationships, work-life, spirituality and health.

Anxiety

Humans need some level of alertness and awareness of danger to survive. However, when the brain is constantly on alert and over reacting to stimuli, a person will feel agitated, irritable and eventually worn out.

Over time anxiety narrows a person’s choices in life, as they strive to avoid situations that are distressing to them.

Depression

A person’s encounter with depression is a unique to evey individual. For some, depression results in a lack of motivation, feeling tired and sad.

Others may feel irritable and stuck in an unsatisfying place in life. For all people, life involves joy and loss, fulfillment and disappointment. For the depressed person, the ability to experience joy diminishes and negative feelings overwhelm them.

The triggers for anxiety and depression may be external circumstances or internal thoughts and feelings. Therapy helps a person identify triggers and  helps them to develop strategies to eliminate or work through them.
